Vintage Letter Organizer Turned Conversation Starter

While book hunting the other day, I came across this lovely vintage monthly bill and/or letter organizer. My heart leapt when I saw the antique white paint and jeweled drawer. I grabbed it, of course. For $5, it is one of my better thrift store finds. The gem sat in my car for two weeks while I figured out what to do with it. We pay most of our bills online, so bill organization was out of the question. Then, Nate surprised me by telling me that he unexpectedly had to quit his second job yesterday because his super secret class required him to stay till seven on the weekdays. I am terribly excited. While that job was a huge blessing and I thank God for it, Nate usually worked from 7 AM-9:30/10 PM on the weekdays and on Saturday so we rarely ate dinner together. Dinner for one, anybody? I may or may not have watched a lot of BBC mini-series via Netflix this last year during the dinner hour. Ooops. Enough of that, here is the finished product:

As I thought of how nice it will be to eat dinner together, I thought it would be fun to have different fun conversation starters, one for each day. Nate isn’t exactly a chatty Kathy and I come from a family where dinner is just another chance to debate everything, so any help with communication is great.

Each night at dinner, we can pull out a topic to talk about it. I’ll switch out the questions each month and may substitute scriptures or something with a theme. You know I already have grand plans for Christmas/advent with this one!

A plan in place, I remembered my bill divider yesterday afternoon, put on a hoodie so I didn’t look like total tank-top-and-brastrap-wonder {hey, even frumpety-frumps have standards}, and walked outside to the car. Divider in tote, I walked back up to the door and realized I locked myself out. Yep. Didn’t get back in my house till 9:45 last night. At least I put shoes on that time. DIY win.

I used some Martha Stewart fancy pants paper I had from the Vintage Jewelry Board I made and cut them into rectangles.

Then I printed a list of conversation starters, cut them up, and taped a single question on the back of each individual rectangular piece of paper. I think the question featured below would better say “What would the world do without iPhones,” but I digress.

I staggered the colors of paper and threw the questions in haphazardly – life’s too short, after all. I k-n-o-w that as soon as Nate looks at these, he will arrange them to be in date order, i.e. question one goes in the day one slot. It is only a matter of time. I placed our new conversation starter beneath my favorite vintage book and our wedding pictures. It’s a happy vintage place for a happy thrift store find.
